/WHAT_IT_IS

Calcium is essential for bone, muscle function, and nerve conduction. Tightly regulated by PTH and vitamin D.

FAQ

/01What is calcium on a blood test?+

Blood calcium reflects the calcium circulating in your serum, which is essential for bone health, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and blood clotting. It's tightly controlled by parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D, so the level in your blood stays in a narrow band even though most of your body's calcium is stored in bone. It's a routine part of the comprehensive metabolic panel.

/02What is a normal calcium level?+

The typical reference range is about 8.6 to 10.2 mg/dL, though it varies slightly by lab. High calcium can reflect hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D excess, or other conditions, while low calcium can come from low vitamin D, kidney disease, or a low albumin. Compare your value to the range on your own report.

/03What is albumin-corrected calcium and why does it matter?+

Because much of your blood calcium travels bound to albumin, a low albumin can make total calcium look falsely low even when the active (ionized) calcium is normal. A correction formula adjusts the measured calcium for your albumin level, which is why doctors often check both together. If your calcium looks low but your albumin is also low, corrected calcium or an ionized calcium test gives a truer picture.

/04Does TRT, creatine, or training affect calcium?+

Not directly. Testosterone therapy doesn't meaningfully change blood calcium, and normal training or creatine use doesn't move it outside the range in healthy people. A high or low calcium is worth interpreting alongside albumin, vitamin D, and PTH rather than attributing to supplements, and any persistent abnormality should be reviewed by your physician.
