/01What is MCHC on a CBC?+

MCHC stands for mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration — how tightly hemoglobin is packed inside your red blood cells, rather than the total amount per cell. It's a calculated CBC value that essentially divides the hemoglobin content by cell size, giving a quality measure of how oxygen-rich each cell is. It's reported in g/dL.

/02What is a normal MCHC range?+

The normal MCHC range is about 32–36 g/dL. Values below 32 are called hypochromic (hemoglobin-diluted cells), while values above 36 are unusual and often signal dehydration, a lab artifact, or hereditary spherocytosis. MCHC tends to be more stable than MCV or MCH because it corrects for cell size.

/03What's the difference between MCH and MCHC?+

They sound alike but measure different things. MCH is the average amount of hemoglobin in a single red cell, reported in picograms. MCHC is the concentration of that hemoglobin — the amount relative to the cell's volume — reported in g/dL. A big cell can hold a lot of hemoglobin (high MCH) yet still have a normal concentration (normal MCHC) if it's proportionally large.

/04What does a low MCHC mean?+

A low MCHC (hypochromia) means each red cell is carrying less hemoglobin than its size allows, most classically in iron-deficiency anemia and thalassemia. It's usually read alongside a low MCV and MCH to build the picture: microcytic, hypochromic cells together strongly suggest iron deficiency. A single borderline value matters less than the pattern across your red-cell indices.

/05Does TRT change MCHC?+

Rarely and not directly. Testosterone drives your marrow to make more red cells, raising hematocrit and hemoglobin, but it doesn't meaningfully change how concentrated the hemoglobin is inside each cell. The one indirect route is iron: men doing frequent phlebotomy or donation to control a high hematocrit can drift iron-deficient over time, which can lower MCHC and MCH. A persistent abnormality is worth investigating with iron studies independent of your therapy.
