/WHAT_IT_IS

Prolactin is a pituitary hormone primarily involved in lactation but also regulates the HPTA in men. Elevated prolactin can suppress testosterone independently of TRT.

/NORMAL_RANGE

Adult male reference: 4.0–15.2 ng/mL.

What does high Prolactin mean?

  • +Prolactinoma (pituitary tumor) — most common pathologic cause.
  • +Hypothyroidism, certain medications (antipsychotics, opioids).
  • +Chronic stress, recent sex or nipple stimulation (transient).

What does low Prolactin mean?

  • +Generally not clinically significant in men.

/ON_TRT

Elevated prolactin can cause low libido and erectile dysfunction independent of testosterone levels. If your T is in the upper range but libido is poor, check prolactin. Pathologic elevations (>2x upper limit) warrant pituitary imaging.
