Transferrin saturation = iron ÷ TIBC × 100. The most useful single marker for distinguishing iron deficiency from chronic disease.

/NORMAL_RANGE

Reference: 20–50%. <20% = likely iron deficiency. >45% = consider hemochromatosis screening.

What does high TSAT mean?

  • +Hemochromatosis, hemolysis.

What does low TSAT mean?

  • +Iron deficiency, chronic inflammation.

/ON_TRT

TSAT >45% combined with high ferritin warrants genetic testing for HFE mutations (hemochromatosis), especially in men of Northern European descent.
