Total cholesterol is the sum of all cholesterol carriers in blood — LDL, HDL, and a fraction of VLDL. Useful as a screen but the components matter more.

Desirable: <200 mg/dL. Borderline: 200–239. High: ≥240.
What does high Total Chol mean?
- +Diet, genetics, hypothyroidism, AAS use, some medications.
What does low Total Chol mean?
- +Severe malnutrition, statins, hyperthyroidism.
/ON_TRT
TRT often modestly lowers HDL (the protective one) without dramatically changing total cholesterol. Pay attention to ApoB and LDL particle number for true cardiovascular risk.
